“As though looking through a dusty window pane, the past is something [he] could see but not touch, and everything [he] sees is blurred and indistinct”

Justine Ellen Chen is a genderqueer, Chinese-American production designer (ADG Local 800) and set decorator. Through love of artifact and archive, Chen works to bring texture, memory, and emotion to all the spaces they design and curate.

Chen is currently a WIF Production Designer Fellow and was one of five filmmakers to receive the inaugural WIF x e.l.f. Makers grant in 2025.

In their personal art practice, Chen works as a multi-disciplinary video and sculpture artist, using sets as their medium of choice.  Chen is most interested in exploring the dissonance of their identity within the context of their upbringing in a Southern California immigrant family, as well as exploring the fluid and temporal nature of archive.
