“As though looking through a dusty window pane, the past is something [he] could see but not touch, and everything [he] sees is blurred and indistinct”

Justine Ellen Chen is a genderqueer, Chinese-American production designer (ADG Local 800) and set decorator. Through love of artifact and archive, Chen works to bring texture, memory, and emotion to all the spaces they design and curate.

Their design work has screened at festivals such as Slamdance, Tribeca Film Festival, Outfest, and Frameline, and can also be found in the Disney Launchpad Season 2 collection for "The Roof" and "Maxine", streaming on Disney+. Chen also set decorates commercials and music videos, working with artists and brands like LISA (Blackpink), Tyla , Hennessy X.O., and Audible. Most recently, the first feature they designed, SURRENDER, premiered at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Chen just wrapped production as a designer on their 2nd feature film BETTER LIFE, starring Randall Park, Margaret Cho, Ming-Na Wen, and Joel Kim Booster.

Chen is currently a WIF Production Designer Fellow and was one of five filmmakers to receive the inaugural WIF x e.l.f. Makers grant in 2025.

In their personal art practice, Chen works as a multi-disciplinary video and sculpture artist. Their current installation project, "Fickle Archive," blends their craft of production design with sculpture and experimental filmmaking. Chen is most interested in exploring the dissonance of their identity within the context of their upbringing in a Southern California immigrant family, as well as exploring the fluid and temporal nature of archive. Previously, Chen received the WAVE Grant for their short film INHERITORS.
